Detailed Course Information

According to Merchant Shipping (Safe Manning, Training and Certification) Regulations, 2013: “Radio operators must have completed approved training and meet the standard of competence specified in the SAMSA Code of Qualifications”. This makes the course attendance mandatory. There are no educational requirements to attend this course.

Content & notes for course

  • Content of course will cover the SRC syllabus as found in the SAMSA Code.
  • SRC course (Full) – Modules A, B, C, D and E of the SRC syllabus are to be covered

Course duration:

  • SRC Course (Full): 2 days (16hrs)
  • After receiving payment for your booking, we will email you the course notes so that you can read through them 3/4 times before attending the course.

Course fee:

Full course: R2950.00 per person and includes MSoE examination fee and SRC Certificate and the SAMSA submission fee (R635.00).

Cancellation and Substitution policy:
* In the case of cancellation 10 workdays prior to the course, 75% of the course fee is refundable. A substitute can be provided by the attendee with no charge for the name change;
* In the case of cancellation 5 workdays prior to the course, 50% of the course fee is refundable. A substitute can be provided by the attendee with no charge for the name change;
* No refunds for later cancellations;
* NO REFUNDS FOR NO SHOWS OR NON-COMPLETION.
* All training is transferable to another attendee provided such transfer is done prior to the course commencing.

Course Cancellation or Postponement:
VHF Training reserves the right to cancel any training course if the minimum required attendees is not achieved 2 days prior to the scheduled course date. Notice will be provided with the option to reschedule for a future course date or to receive a full refund of registration fees.
VHF Training is not responsible for any expenses incurred by the customer if a training course is cancelled.

If a training class is cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances such as weather, disaster or emergency, the customer is entitled to reschedule for a future training course.

GMDSS components (2 hours)
12h45 – 13h15: VHF (DSC) basics
13h15 – 14h45: Operational VHF DSC procedures in the GMDSS
14h45 – 15h00: Break
Voice procedures (2 hours)
15h00 – 15h30: Phonetic alphabet and figure code
15h30 – 17h00: DSC Distress, urgency and safety communication procedures

Day 2:
Voice and practical operation of the radio (2 hours)
08h30 – 09h30: DSC Distress, urgency and safety communication procedures
09h30 – 09h45: Break
Voice procedures (1.5 hours)
09h45 – 10h00: D1. All relevant communications in regards to the safety of life at sea
10h00 – 10h15: Break
10h15 – 11h00: DSC Distress, urgency and safety communication procedures with Practical knowledge of radio communications
knowledge of the emergency positioning indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and Search and rescue transponder (SART) (1 hour)
